Avondale

From Coldwater to Avondale

Avondale began as Coldwater, a small settlement established near the Agua Fria River by William "Billy" G. Moore in 1880. Moore operated a stage stop, store and saloon, and the community later grew around Western Avenue as ranching, railroads and cotton farming shaped the area.

The Avondale name gradually replaced Coldwater in the early 1900s. The city incorporated on December 16, 1946, and today more than 100,000 people call Avondale home. In 2026, the community marks 80 years as an incorporated city.
